A Soft Boiled Egg

Updated: Dec 24, 2019

OK, I realize I'm struggling to figure out how to boil an egg here but this is tougher than it looks.

I do love a soft boiled egg but it's always a bit of a guessing game and at least half the time the eggs are a whole lot harder than I'd been shooting for. My solution to his has always been to poach the egg because at least then you've got some kind of visual queue that the silly thing is done but after catching an episode of America's Test Kitchen on TV I decided to give this one a try again.

This is their technique so I take none of the credit here. I was a little doubtful when I tried this this morning but I gotta say, I was very impressed with the result. I see a whole lot of yummy, runny eggs in our future!

  • Take a large pot and put 1 inch of water in it.

  • Put on a tight fitting lid.

  • Bring it to a vigorous boil and then turn it down to low.

  • Add as many eggs as you need and replace the lid.

  • The eggs are cooked by the steam, more than the water so don't be concerned that most of the eggs are not submerged.

  • Cook for 6 minutes and then enjoy a perfect soft boiled (steamed) egg.
