Ok, I realize getting excited at the prospect of growing grass is laughable but that’s about where my gardening skill level is at right now so bear with me ;) We tackled a dry dirt patch along the western side of the house last week. It gets limited sunlight because it’s shaded by the trees next door. I’ve never seen much of anything grow here, not even the weeds have invaded this space yet. So we started by cleaning up as best as we could, turning the soil and then putting down 8 bags of top soil. Could have used more but that’s all I could squeeze in to my Jeep. Then we put down ‘Scotts Turf Builder Dense Shade Mix’ according to the directions on the bag. The bag claimed that it was enough to cover 750 sq ft but even using the spreader on the suggested ‘number’ we ran out pretty quickly. I’d say we covered maybe 200-250 sq ft. Not sure if we messed something up or if their math was a bit optimistic. We did the same process with 1 bag of ‘Scotts® Starter® Fertilizer’ for good measure and then watered it down. Watered twice a day for a week. I was about to give up and try something else but this morning I came out to find itty bitty grass. Did a little happy dance. By the looks of things it will be patchy and full of bald spots but at least it’s progress so I’m calling that a win.
